Slumberland

Early Years

Slumberland was formed in 1919 by John Seccombe, a recently demobbed airman. Using his war gratuity, he established the factory in Birmingham.

The first products to emerge were feather pillows, straw palliasses and flock mattresses. The base of the bed was formed by stretching a woven wire mesh over a metal frame.

In the early 1920's John Seccombe was joined by his brother Leslie and the production of the first spring mattresses began a few years later. Although pocket springs had been available for some time the uptake was still comparatively low at that stage but it did not stop the company growing with production capacity increasing from 3,500 to 80,000 square feet from 1925 to 1930.

The Slumberland Brand Emerges

The Slumberland logo was introduced in the early 1930's on a range of beds and became so popular that the name remained.

In the 1930's John and Leslie's third brother Stanley joined the business and became the company's first chairman. This started a period of innovation with the first stitching machine, the first divan bases, pocketed springs in 1936 and the new Interlock Spring System.

Production during World War 2 almost halted as production moved to parachutes, flak pads, belts, buttons and uniform accessories. After the war the brothers had to rebuild the business and in 1947 changed the company name to Slumberland Limited.By 1960 the group in the UK grew to seven bedding companies, component factories, export and contract manufacturers based in Oldham.

The company continued to grow with the most important technical breakthrough in 1964 - the perfecting of Posture Springing® - representing one of the most important breakthroughs for the company since the war. This has developed into Pocketed Posture Springs where each row of springs is encapsulated within its own continuous pocket for even greater comfort.

Slumberland has been responsible for a number of firsts in the bedding industry. It was the first brand to introduce drawers into a divan base - a highly practical and universally adopted answer to bedroom storage problems. In 1999, it was the first brand to launch the anti-dust mite bed and it also pioneered the no-turn sprung interior mattress in its best selling Seal range.
